Pablo Lazo

Pablo Lazo: Was born in Güines, Havana Cuba on March 11, 1987. He has always shown, even at a very early age an innate ability for the arts. He studied Art, and trained as a Painter, Draftsman, Printmaker and Sculptor at the Academy of Fine Arts Eduardo Abela in San Antonio de los Baños (2001- 2004.). He moved to Miami in 2004, where he currently lives and works. His works explore contemporary interests for existing social problems and fundamental necessities. His works focus on the creativity of human beings to survive everyday life with somany obstacles and limitations. He gives prominence to some of the most unexpected objects as models for his works. These objects represent the raw trace of human need.

Lazo’s artistic influences range from Leopoldo Romañach (a renowned Cuban painter) to Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (a Dutch painter and etcher). His iconography is a vast reference to different multi-media installations that include sculptures, objects and foundmaterials inorder to capture an immediate anddirect reaction towards his work. His fundamental concern is with the relationship between “necessities”and”creativity.”These different concerns are manifested through his compositions that are filled with different sentiments, and also by narrating personal experiences that gives them more depth and a deeper meaning.

Recently, Pablo has been working on a series that is entitled “Misery.”
the series touches objects created by the Cubans because of the lack of resources. Forming the artist iconography. For example The (Chivichana) is a means of transportation used in mountainous regions of Cuba and a child’s toy in many other areas of the country. The (Chismosa) are types of home-made lamps created by Cubans due to ongoing power outages experienced by the people. In many Cuban homes due to lack of spare parts for bicycles, which are the most common means of transportation in the country, people are forced to reuse all kinds of objects may need in the future. Then people will hang on a wall in their backyards things that could be used later.
